What kind of wood do you use for a speargun?
The most common woods being used these days for spearguns are: Teak, Padauk, Mahogany, Sapele, and to a lesser degree Purpleheart. Technically you can use any wood if you will be sealing the gun with an epoxy finish. Beware, if you use a hardwood like maple be meticulous.
Is a speargun legal?
California. In California commercial spearfishing is illegal while only recreational spearfishing is permitted under a license. You can both spearfish in saltwater or freshwater, but you’ll need different licenses for both.
Are wooden spearguns better?
Timber spearguns are able to accommodate higher loading power thanks to the materials ability to withstand high strain, unlike metal or carbon which can begin to bend or crack. Timber guns, like carbon guns, don’t reverberate when they come into contact with something in the water like your bands, spear or anything.
What makes a good spear?
When searching for a pole to make your spear, you’ll want something at least as tall as you. Ideally it would be a few inches taller in order to give you a better reach. The pole you choose should be anywhere from 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 cm) in diameter. Hardwoods, such as ash or oak, are best for this project.
Why does wood speargun?
Banded wooden styles of spearguns are used primarily to hunt larger, bluewater game. This banded style is slower in process, but more powerful than the Euro-band in delivery. For those hunting meticulously in clean waters, the added range of this style can be quite advantageous.

Most times, if a shark begins to get close you can poke or direct them away with the end of your speargun and they will keep their distance. They are testing how close they can get to get the fish, but you never want to spear a shark. It creates a more dangerous situation for us well as for the animal.
